While bouquets of flowers are typical during February, you may find yourself wanting to give or to receive something that will last beyond the dried petals. In this case, a well-established plant in a nice pot, with a simple note, would be a great gift this Valentine season. Check out these plant choices that can be as colorful even without the flowers.
1. Red aglaonema
A very easy-to-care-for variety that glows with bright red leaves. It will surely delight the eyes of the receiver as it brightens any dull space of the garden or even a living room. It also produces offshoots rather frequently, so give it a few months and it'll surely be ready for repotting.
Red aglaonema grows well in a mid-highly lit area, with well-draining soil. Water them as the soil dries up.
2. Peace lilies
Not only will you give your loved one a gift, but also will help purify the air around him/her! This houseplant is a favorite as it thrives well indoors (although you can also grow them outdoors). The deep-green shiny leaves and white flowers (not actual flowers, but bracts or modified leaves) that last long, surely give life to any spot at home.
This member of the family Araceae (not true lilies) loves to be watered a lot at once but needs the soil to dry up in between watering schedules. They love well-draining soil and are very forgiving. They can actually tell you when they need to be watered--just take a look at their drooping leaves!
3. Orchids
An elegant gift with beautiful blooms that last for months. Orchids never go out-of-trend because they are perfect for countertops, as a centerpiece or an accent to a neutral-colored spot. Its rich-colored blooms dangle like dancing butterflies, and the scent never fails to calm anyone who's around it.
Orchids love a humid, bright spot. They can come in clay pots, ceramic vases, or glass jars. Mist the bark or medium they are in when it's dry, usually once a week.
4. Cacti and Succulents
Trendy, colorful succulents that can be arranged in a dish, or planted in individual pots-- they make a lovely gift for anyone. And I say "anyone" because succulents and cacti alike are friendly choices even for beginner gardeners who tend to forget watering schedules. These drought-tolerant gems possess very distinct hues and shapes. Not to mention that many of them come in cute sizes, making them really cute as a gift.
Cacti and succulents have thick, fleshy leaves, or stems. These are designed that way to carry extra moisture that the plant needs in order to survive in an arid environment. So when caring for "CNS", it's a must that the medium is fast-draining, because they'd rather dry up a bit than sit in wet soil.
